UNH has long been a leader in climate 和 emissions scholarship 和 operational best practices. UNH was one of the Charter Signatories to the 气候承诺 in 2006. This commitment, in which we are joined by 数以百计的其他美国人.S. 校园, commits UNH to a goal of carbon neutrality 和 requires the university to track 和 publicly report its carbon footprint 和 maintain an up-to-date 气候 Action Plan (WildCAP). UNH set an ambitious goal of halving our emissions between 2001 和 2020 和 achieved those reductions 之前 我们的目标日期.

Our Progress: 2001-2019 UNH Total Greenhouse Gas 排放 in Comparison to Target Commitments

line graph showing UNH's 2001-2019 progress in reducing greenhouse gas emissions. In 2019 UNH exceeded the target 和 was 60% below 2001 emissions 和 met the IPPC 2030 target 和 was 45% below 2010 emissions

采用WildCAP 2021, UNH has set a new goal of reducing its primary emissions (Scope 1 和 Scope 2) 75% below its 2010 emissions levels by 2030. This is in line with what scientists say is the level of reduction needed globally.

除了, UNH also reports air emissions from its cogeneration plant 和 was 第一批校园之一 开始跟踪我们的 氮足迹

UNH获得总分的84%(9分).24/11) compared to an AASHE member average of 45.54%.

星星 "seeks to recognize institutions that are measuring 和 reducing their greenhouse gas 和 air pollutant emissions. 除了, institutions that inventory 和 take steps to reduce their air pollutant emissions can positively impact the health of the campus 社区, as well as the health of their local communities 和 regions."

的 UNH Durham campus's climate action plan –called “WildCAP” after the university’s wildcat mascot—consolidates the 能源 和 climate mitigation 和 adaptation planning 和 work being done across campus into a coherent framework that guides UNH Durham.

WildCAP is written 和 implemented by the 联合国大学能源工作组(ETF) 并听取校园社区的意见. 的 first version of WildCAP was published in 2009, 下一次更新发布于2014年, 最新的更新是在2021年.

UNH was 第一批校园之一 in the world to estimate its contribution to global climate change. 的 可持续发展研究所 manages the process of updating UNH’s carbon footprint regularly 和 reports it to 第二天性

Nitrogen is a significant (和 too often overlooked) global pollutant that contributes not only to climate change but also to water quality 和 air quality degradation. A 氮足迹 connects campus activities with the resulting nitrogen pollution released to the environment. 的 largest contributors to a campus' nitrogen include food purchases, utilities, 和 transportation.

从2015年开始, UNH was one of a h和ful of 校园 that began tracking its own 氮足迹, measuring baseline FY 2014 nitrogen pollution at 186 metric tons of nitrogen. 的 largest contributors were food purchases (72%), transportation (13%), 和 utilities (8%).

This work to track 和 manage our own 氮足迹 at UNH is important locally because it allows for a more comprehensive underst和ing of our environmental impact, including the ways in which we contribute to the urgent nitrogen pollution problem in the Great Bay watershed. 它让我们得以发展, 并进一步说明, setting targets 和 implementing management strategies for reducing this impact.

Tracking 和 managing the environmental “footprint” of a campus, 社区, or business is a skill that is increasingly in dem和. UNH researchers have been working on developing tools, 标准, 和 methods for underst和ing carbon 和 氮足迹 for two decades.

可持续性 Indicator Management 和 Analysis Platform (SIMAP) was developed to help organizations undertake this task, 和 hundreds of organizations across the globe, 包括中, use it to support their carbon 和 nitrogen management efforts. UNH现在提供一个 Certificate Program in 碳 Footprinting to help 社区 members at 和 beyond UNH learn this marketable 和 valuable skill.
